Lewys Twamley joins Merthyr Town FC

Merthyr Town Football Club is excited to have completed the signing of former Newport County AFC attacker, Lewys Twamley.

The three-time Wales Under-19 international came through the ranks at The Exiles, eventually signing a professional contract at the League Two club back in the summer of 2021.

The 20-year-old made four professional appearances for Newport, with a memorable appearance coming in the Exiles’ 2021/22 EFL Trophy campaign in a 4-3 defeat against Arsenal Under-21s.

During his final season at Rodney Parade, the young winger spent time at Pontypridd United in the Cymru Premier, registering 24 appearances for Andrew Stokes’ men, scoring four goals as well as earning four assists. Twamley also arrives at Penydarren Park with a bit of Southern League Premier South experience too, having featured for Salisbury on loan back in 2022.

“I’m buzzing to get the deal over the line,” Twamley said after finalising the deal. “It’s been a tough few months with no club and everything else, so I’m grateful for the opportunity. I feel like I’ve got a lot to prove so I can’t wait to get started now and show everyone what I can do.

“I feel like I’ll bring a lot of excitement to the team. I’m a player that likes to get on the ball, take players on and make things happen. I love scoring goals so hopefully I can add some goals to the team.

“I can’t wait to play in front of the fans, they were a big part of me signing for Merthyr. The support they bring home and away looks incredible and I’m excited to get the chance to play in front of them and hopefully give them something to cheer about.”

Manager Paul Michael added: “ Lewys is a promising player who is technically very good, he’s good at carrying the ball and in tight situations with a good end product. These attributes are something that we rely on with our style of play as we need that little bit of magic to break teams down when they sit in against us.

“Recently we’ve missed these traits when Frazer and Keiran have been missing, so I’m looking forward to seeing what impact Lewys can have on the team. He’s also motivated and determined to progress which is the type of player and age bracket that fits with our current recruitment plans looking to secure the best young talent in South wales outside of the professional clubs.”

Twamley will be available for selection ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup fixture.
