NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Title) Board Statement - Season Tickets 4 June 2023 The Board fully appreciate the positive atmosphere that has been generated over the past twelve months and wish to maintain this momentum for the coming season. Our Board, Team Management, Coaching Staff and Players are all especially thankful for the tremendous support generated by our fans. Now is everyone’s opportunity to make a further contribution to our momentum, through the purchase of a season ticket. Unfortunately, the reality is that all the Club’s costs have increased considerably over the past twelve months. Rising prices and inflation have had a significant impact on our general expenditure levels - to such an extent that only through prudent budgeting will we expect to break even in our 2022/23 financial forecasting for the year (that ended on 31st May 2023). Whilst the Board are very aware of the cost of living crisis that is affecting everyone, unfortunately, there was no real alternative other than to reluctantly increase the cost of our season tickets, as well as some admission prices for next season. Last seasons costs were initially lower as – prior to being reprieved – prices were set with an expectation of playing 19 home games at Step 4. Since then, Insurance premiums, match-day officials expenses, and even the transaction fee charges for using your debit or credit card to pay for anything at the Club have all substantially increased during the past 12 months. Chairman Les Barlow said "It's not ideal, but that's the economic situation that the whole country is currently facing. Our suppliers have increased the bar stock prices, our transport costs have increased, utility costs have gone up, as we all know food prices have shot up, it’s just affecting everyone and the football club is not immune" . As well as saving everyone money, purchasing a season ticket provides the club with a guaranteed income before a ball is kicked, supporting the clubs financial stability. Even with the increase in costs we believe that our season ticket prices offers all of our fans value for money – which provides a cost saving against on-the-day prices. And with the guarantee that all income generated goes 100% into the playing budget. Previous Next

NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Title) Lewis Powell agrees terms ahead of 2023/24 season 21 July 2023 Merthyr Town Football Club is delighted to confirm that Lewis Powell has agreed terms ahead of the 2023/24 season. Powell joined the Martyrs during December of the 2021/22 season and was the first player to re-sign following the arrival of manager Paul Michael last summer. During that season, Powell was the club’s top goal scorer, becoming an integral part of Town’s attacking force. Prior to his move to Penydarren Park, the experienced forward joined from Larkhall Athletic where he was the Southern League Division One South Golden boot winner two seasons on the bounce. Powell began his career at Swansea City FC before joining Bristol Rovers in 2006. Following his release from the Memorial Ground, he went onto feature for a variety of non-league clubs including, Chippenham Town, Taunton Town, Weston-Super-Mare and Evesham United. All those spells accumulated in himself making over 500 Southern League appearances. Last season, the forward was an ever-present force for the Martyrs, scoring vital goals against Gloucester City and Folkestone Invicta in the club’s Emirates FA Cup run success. His commitment and determination has endeared himself to the Penydarren Park faithful, becoming a real fan favourite amongst the terraces. Commenting after his signature was secured, manager Paul Michael said: “Lewis is a proven goalscorer at this level and more than that he is a different type of player to the other attackers we have in the squad. He will compliment the others with his experience, disruption of defenders and his back-to-goal play. “Lewis has had some injury problems over the last season and he’s working hard to overcome a hamstring issue at the moment, so he may yet be a few weeks away before we see him but he’s got the bit between his teeth and you can see that in the individual work he’s putting in. Lewis scored some huge goals for us last season and I look forward to more of the same when he’s fully fit this season.” Previous Next

  • Winchester City v Merthyr Town

< Back Winchester City v Merthyr Town 16 April 2024 Next Previous Kick Off: 19:45 2-0 Result: Hillier Way, Winchester, UK Match Report: It now looks as though the challenge to gain the final play-off place will go down to the very last game of the season, after suffering a real setback with this 2-0 defeat. In the opening twenty minutes on a difficult surface, neither side really created anything of significance to trouble either defence as both sides looked to dominate in midfield. An unfortunate mistake with a clearance by Jaimie Cogman after 23 minutes, presented Dan Jones with an opportunity that he gratefully accepted from distance. This put the Martyrs at a considerable disadvantage, although with their first attacking threat Gethyn Hill’s shot in the 32nd minute forced Luke Cairney to save with his legs. The opportunity to regroup at half time was dealt a devastating blow in the last minute of the first half when Sam Ashton scored from close range. The game deteriorated in the second half as the attacking levels dropped and the price for conceding two first half goals took its toll. The closest either side came to adding to the scoreline was when Winchester hit the post directly from a corner. Unfortunately, the visitors couldn’t find a way to trouble the Winchester defence and the game ended in disappointment for the travelling fans. Fractionally before the final whistle blew Liam Angel was dismissed for two yellow cards and will now be suspended for the final game of the season. There is very little margin for error now, of course anything can still happen. It is still possible that Bracknell might drop points somewhere, and that’s the mindset the manager and the players must have now. Previous Next

NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Item) Lee Lucas Returns to the Martyrs 16 June 2024 We are delighted to announce the signing of former Martyr and Wales Under-21 international Lee Lucas from JD Cymru Premier side, Barry Town United. The incoming 32-year-old adds a wealth of experience to the Martyrs midfield, after initially joining the Martyrs from Scottish Premiership side, Motherwell in 2018, and making over 60 appearances. After spending two seasons with the Martyrs, Lee then moved to Taunton Town in 2020, where he would stay for three seasons which included winning promotion as champions to the National League South with the Peacocks in 2021/22. The midfielder started his career with Swansea City where he gained caps at Wales Under-17, 19 and 21 level, including captaining Wales U21’s, before loan spells with League Two sides Burton Albion and Cheltenham Town. Most recently, the midfielder has been with Barry Town United after leaving Taunton Town in January 2024. Lee made eight appearances for Barry, scoring one goal, before joining the Martyrs ahead of the 2024/25 Southern League season. Speaking on agreeing terms with Lee, Paul Michael said, “Lee is a fantastic footballer, his pedigree and talent is there for all to see. When it became apparent that there may be an opportunity to bring Lee in, we had to move on that, as he will significantly improve our team. He will be a leader amongst our squad adding that bit of experience and class to our young, talented group. What I really like about this one is although Lee is an experienced player, I know he’s still very hungry for success, and for success at Merthyr Town in particular. That’s exactly what we need, it shouldn’t be easy to play for this club, and if you earn the opportunity to represent Merthyr Town and wear the jersey, there falls a responsibility to be successful. Lee knows what our ambitions are here, he knows how we play, and he knows all about the supporters and the club from his previous spell and this is where he wants to be. That speaks volumes to me and I now can’t wait to get the players back in on the 29th June and get going.” Previous Next
