NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Title) Annual Sponsored Walk - Saturday 8th July 2023 2 July 2023 On Saturday 8th July, our annual sponsored walk takes place from Cantref back to Merthyr, arriving at the ground prior to the opening pre-season friendly against Porthmadog, which kicks off at 2pm. This year the walk will be raising funds for Andy’s Man Club and the Alzheimer's Society . Two very worthy causes and any financial contributions to support the walkers would be greatly appreciated by both organisations. The walkers are invited to assemble at Penydarren Park by 8:30am on Saturday morning, prior to volunteer drivers transporting all of the walkers to the start point. The group will walk via the gap behind Pen Y Fan down past the Neuadd reservoirs towards Pontsticill (there’ll of course be the traditional pint for the walkers waiting at the Pant Cad Ifor Inn) and then down into Merthyr Tydfil town to reach their goal at Penydarren Park. There will also be collection buckets available for fans attending the pre-season game against Porthmadog at the ground from 2pm on Saturday. Inspiration for the choices of charity was provided by Vicki McClure for her ongoing support of dementia charities and also Andy’s Man Club in memory of our friend Ceri Collins. Donations can be made directly to the charities via the following links: https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/navigation/make-donation https://www.justgiving.com/remember/1086235/Ceri%20-Collins All Merthyr Town fans are invited to participate in the walk, whether for all or part of the journey. Volunteers are also sought to provide transport and support to the walkers on Saturday. Please note the following contact details for any further information on joining the walk, volunteers on the route or helping with fund raising at the ground: Contact Mark Evans wolvesy@yahoo.co.uk for more details 07774 708063 Previous Next

NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Title) Tom Handley agrees terms with Martyrs 21 May 2023 Merthyr Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Tom Handley has agreed terms ahead of the 2023/24 Southern League season. Handley was one of only two players to feature in every game of the 2022/23 season, making a total of 49 appearances, and scoring 8 goals. Handley, 22, joined the Martyrs in the summer of 2022 and was one of Paul Michael’s key targets as soon as he took on the managerial role. Tom moved to Merthyr Town after impressing the season previous at Cirencester Town, as well as having a short spell on loan in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division with Lydney Town in 2018/19. Typically, a full-back, Tom has played in several roles for the Martyrs during the 2022/23 season, enjoying success in a more-advanced wide role, as well as stepping in at centre midfield, and at the centre of defence. Tom recently became captain of the English Universities’ team in early 2023 and has featured for them towards the back end of the 2022/23 season. His strikes against Harrow Borough, Chesham United and Hanwell Town have made him a fans favourite at Penydarren Park, and Paul Michael was delighted on securing Tom’s signature for next season: “Keeping Tom is as important as any new signing this summer. His versatility is a manager’s dream, but that versatility is down to his outstanding understanding of the game and brilliant technical ability that allows him to refine and adapt his game to suit each role. “I am sure next season his position will settle with us, but he will be all the better a player because of his varied experiences last season. Tom’s goal threat from wherever he plays is also important, he chipped in with a number of goals and assists last season and I am really looking forward to working with him again.” Previous Next

Ricardo Ricardo Rees Forward 10 < Back Sponsored By: Jeff Mack HOME In Memory of Gwynne Mack AWAY Signed from: X Profile: News: Rees is a 22-year-old forward who joined the Yate Town in early October 2020. Paul Michael then brought Ricardo to South Wales with him, when he was appointed manager of Merthyr Town in June 2022. He began his career at Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City and most recently became a regular in the Robins’ under-23 side before his release in the summer of 2020. During his time at Ashton Gate, he had a loan spell with Vanarama National League South side Bath City in October 2018 and with Yate`s league rivals Salisbury in 2019/20. Ricardo had a fantastic first season at The Martyrs, scoring 21 goals and starting in all 49 games played during the season. He quickly became a fans favourite at Penydarren Park, winning the Top Goalscorer, Player of The Year and Junior Martyrs' Player of the Year at the End of Season awards in 2022/23. - Merthyr Town v Yate Town
< Back Merthyr Town v Yate Town 2 September 2023 Next Previous Kick Off: 15:00 5-1 Result: Merthyr Town Football Club, Penydarren Park, Merthyr Tydfil, UK Match Report: When Ollie Mehew scored with a powerful header at the back post after just 2 minutes, everything went like clockwork for the next hour. Three further goals in very quick succession from Keiran Evans, Ricardo Rees and Tom Handley virtually ended this First Qualifying Round tie as a contest. Since returning from injury Keiran Evans has scored twice in three games and this goal like the one he scored against Sholing last weekend provided Aaron Sainsbury with very little chance of saving the well struck shot into the far corner. A few minutes later Ricardo Rees was next on the scoresheet, as he reacts quickly to score from a rebound after the keeper makes the initial save. Within a minute Tom Handley adds a fourth goal with a fierce shot past Sainsbury, for his second goal in the last six days. With a comfortable half time lead Paul Michael introduced a triple substitution at the start of the second half, replacing Matthew Harris, Frazer Thomas and Keiran Evans with Tom Stokes, Joe Woodiwiss and Aneurin Livermore. Any stern words spoken in the Yate dressing room during the interval had the desired effect as the Bluebells improved in the second half without providing any significant threat. A knee injury to Callum Ryan-Phillips after sixty minutes left the Martyrs to play the last half hour with ten men after using their three substitutes at the start of the second half. This required a disciplined performance to prevent Yate posing any threat and the side kept possession really well, won the ball back quickly when out of possession and shut down any potential attacking moves providing defensive cover to Jamie Cogman. Without pressing forward and taking any chances the Martyrs relied on a quick counter attacking move to score their fifth goal of the game as Ollie Mehew finished confidently from 10-yards. As time ran out Kyle Twose scored a late consolation goal for the visitors. Previous Next
