NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Title) Lewis Powell agrees terms ahead of 2023/24 season 21 July 2023 Merthyr Town Football Club is delighted to confirm that Lewis Powell has agreed terms ahead of the 2023/24 season. Powell joined the Martyrs during December of the 2021/22 season and was the first player to re-sign following the arrival of manager Paul Michael last summer. During that season, Powell was the club’s top goal scorer, becoming an integral part of Town’s attacking force. Prior to his move to Penydarren Park, the experienced forward joined from Larkhall Athletic where he was the Southern League Division One South Golden boot winner two seasons on the bounce. Powell began his career at Swansea City FC before joining Bristol Rovers in 2006. Following his release from the Memorial Ground, he went onto feature for a variety of non-league clubs including, Chippenham Town, Taunton Town, Weston-Super-Mare and Evesham United. All those spells accumulated in himself making over 500 Southern League appearances. Last season, the forward was an ever-present force for the Martyrs, scoring vital goals against Gloucester City and Folkestone Invicta in the club’s Emirates FA Cup run success. His commitment and determination has endeared himself to the Penydarren Park faithful, becoming a real fan favourite amongst the terraces. Commenting after his signature was secured, manager Paul Michael said: “Lewis is a proven goalscorer at this level and more than that he is a different type of player to the other attackers we have in the squad. He will compliment the others with his experience, disruption of defenders and his back-to-goal play. “Lewis has had some injury problems over the last season and he’s working hard to overcome a hamstring issue at the moment, so he may yet be a few weeks away before we see him but he’s got the bit between his teeth and you can see that in the individual work he’s putting in. Lewis scored some huge goals for us last season and I look forward to more of the same when he’s fully fit this season.” Previous Next

- Salisbury v Merthyr Town
< Back Salisbury v Merthyr Town 16 March 2024 Next Previous Kick Off: 15:00 0-0 Result: Raymond McEnhill Stadium, Partridge Way, Old Sarum, Salisbury SP4 6PU, UK Match Report: Facing the prospect of playing two games in less than 48 hours, both of which were away from home, there was also the daunting task of playing second in the table Salisbury to contend with, minus Gethyn Hill, Frazer Thomas, Keiran Evans and Jaimie Cogman all for a variety of reasons. The main team changes involved Liam Angel and Josh Yorwerth replacing Matthew Harris and Nick Rhodes in the centre of defence, who bothed dropped to the bench, while Tom Stokes replaced Gethyn Hill. The other two substitutes were Jow Woodiwiss and Tana Jones. With both sides looking to protect their current play off places, there was a cautious opening approach in the early stages, but it was Tom Handley who came the closest to providing the Martyrs with the opening goal when he spun quickly only to see his effort strike the crossbar. With both defences on top this was the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock in the opening half. Will Fuller made a crucial save from Noah Coppin, before Twamley and Rees forced Alex Rutter into action at the other end. The Martyrs were reduced to ten men when Aneurin Livermore pick up his second yellow card after 75 minutes. Josh Yorwerth was a tower of strength at the heart of the Martyrs defence, although it was another great save from Fuller to deny Coppin from close range that kept the scores level. Evan with a man short for the final twenty four minute (included added time), the Martyrs remained organised and their game management of the final stages secured an important point and a clean sheet. If the league placings remain the same until the end of the season both Clubs will be facing one another for a third time in the play-off semi final. Previous Next
