< Back AFC Totton v Merthyr Town 1 November 2023 Next Previous Kick Off: 19:45 2-1 Result: THE SNOWS STADIUM, SALISBURY RD, TOTTON, SOUTHAMPTON SO40 2RW Match Report: Poor weather in the southern part of the UK had caused the postponement of the original game on the weekend, as heavy rain also greeted the teams at the start of the second attempt at playing this FA Trophy First Round Proper game. Team selection was restricted by availability with Paul Michael only able to name three substitutes. Both sides started cautiously in the wet conditions and it was the Martyrs who opened the scoring after just 15 minutes. Lewys Twamley created the opening, crossing the ball into the penalty area for Gethyn Hill to win the header and flick onto leading scorer Ricardo Rees, who gave Lewis Noice no chance with a clinical finish. Jaimie Cogman was forced to make a number of smart saves as Totton immediately started to search for an equaliser, but Gethyn Hill almost extended the Martyrs lead as he attempted to chip the ball over Noice who scrambled to save at full stretch. The slender lead was still intact at the half time interval. After exerting considerable pressure from the start of the second period that included a fine Jaimie Cogman save and a last ditch block by Joe Keeping, Totton finally found a way through the Martyrs rearguard. Ethan Taylor created enough space to cross to the unmarked Scott Rendell to score the equaliser from close range in the 74th minute. Totton continued to put the Martyrs defence constantly on the back foot as they looked to find the all important winning goal, which eventually arrived in the first minute of added time. Taylor’s deep free-kick found Luke Hallett arriving at the back-post, as he finally dispatched his header past the Martyrs Man of the Match, Jaimie Cogman. Previous Next

  • Hendon v Merthyr Town

< Back Hendon v Merthyr Town 4 November 2023 Next Previous Kick Off: 15:00 1-0 Result: Silver Jubilee Park Townsend Lane Kingsbury London NW9 7NE Match Report: For the very first time this season and in the twentieth game, the Martyrs failed to score. The team may not have done enough to win the game which was evident from the fact that they failed to find a way through the Hendon defence, but they probably didn’t deserve to lose it either, especially when the manner of the goal was frustrating to say the least. Overall the team played well enough, but even enjoying the majority of possession it doesn’t guarantee you winning matches. The main issue was a lack of cutting edge in the final third and probably taking the wrong option in and around the penalty area. Looking at the game through the prism of incidents, probably we could have defended the goal better than we did, including the initial build up. This would have rendered everything redundant. A throw-in taken on the Hendon right flank in line with the penalty area saw a quick break between two Merthyr defenders as the low delivery into the six yard box was initially parried by Jamie Cogman, when the ball flicked up off a challenge past the out-stretched arm of Cogman the quickest to react was central defender Ethan Light who dived to head the ball home from close range. But we went behind at a crucial time just before the half time interval and didn’t really recover from that, even though Olly Mehew had the ball in the net in the second half it was disallowed for offside. Despite the fact that Jack Evans was missing, we still controlled the middle of the park and had more then enough opportunities to stretch the hosts. We saw plenty of the ball, but little in the way of decisive attacking intent or creating many clear opportunities. It’s perfectly understandable to feel disappointed by the outcome, especially after controlling the game for long periods but there’s clearly something missing in front of goal right now that adds to the pressure of not winning in five matches.
