MATCH REPORT

Merthyr Town maintained their spot at the top of the Southern League Premier South table with a clinical 6-0 home win against 10-man Wimborne Town.

Ricardo Rees opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a curling effort beyond Ross Flitney in goal from the left-side of the area. Lewys Twamley doubled the hosts advantage nine minutes later pouncing on a rebound despite the best efforts of two Wimborne defenders on the goal line.

Rees got his second just before the break with a composed finish beyond the keeper after putting the ball between a defender’s legs on a breakaway.

The visitor’s task was made even more difficult early into the second half as Matthew Burrows was shown a straight red card for striking out at Frazer Thomas following an altercation.

The clinical Rees sealed his hat-trick just beyond the hour mark as he tapped home from close range, the ball falling kindly for him after an initial save from Flitney. Kane Simpson added the fifth in the 77th minute with a powerful strike into the roof of the net from just inside the area.

The dominant rout was capped off by Rees as he added his fourth of the game in the 82nd minute following in on a rebound after Thomas was initially denied.

The result extends The Martyrs unbeaten run in the league to five games.
